Nação Zumbi
(c) Trama

Nação Zumbi<br>(c) Trama The group that put Mangue Bit on the map is back, and back with a vengeance. Nação Zumbi has taken a power pill and its gut-grabbing rhythms, manic guitars and preacher vocals are quite simply explosive in this, the latest and eponymous album. Hard for some to get their heads around this being Brazilian music. But rest assured. And listen carefully. The percussion is pure Pernambuco style. Yes, these lads also come from that culturally opulent region in the north-east of the country with the Maracatu carnival tradition that spawned bands such as Mestre Ambrosio and artists such as Lenine. And although most of the album is made up of hard-hitting music that might seem more at home at Glastonbury than at Womex (where they showcase in 2003 no less), moments such as ‘Prato De Flores’ recall a more melodic and stylistic Brazil. Nação Zumbi were so inseparably linked to the great Chico Science that his tragic death in 1997 could easily have meant the end of the group too. But not so. And this latest album is proof that the boys are on top form, inventing the sound of today’s Brazil with energy and determination.
